The CITU is involved with big, little and medium sized firms, but also with public institutions, in the cooperative project TerraNumerica, Accredited project by the French Business Cluster Cap Digital, about digitalisation of territories and their ressources and the multimedia exploitation of theses pieces of information.

THE MULTIPLICATION OF RESSOURCES

Information systems are diversifying ; the sources, databases, libraries, listings, schedules, catalogues, registers are pieces of information that the user must by himself, tally with to, at last, find the answer to question he thought to be simple.

TO REPRESENT THE TERRITORY

Territory reprentation tools as virtual globes (Google Earth, Nasa World Wind, MSN Virtual Earth, GéoPortail)) are multiplying, trying hard to give diversified and spectacular replies, using advanced information and communication technologies.

In the same trend, the development of digital technologies in the city creates new needs that the usual consultation systems, often far from the expression venues of those needs, can no more satisfy.

Thus, mobility is often in contradiction with our needs of information and it’s important to find quickly a solution which takes into account the diversity of users, contexts and consultation supports.

TerraNumerica is situated at the crossingroad of those questions. The project trys to bring a global reply to this legitim request of crossing ressources, simplicity and quickness of the access to information.

ONE GLOBAL INFORMATION SYSTEM

According to this aim, the poject uses analogic representation modalities accessible thanks to digital. Territory tridimensional representations give to users the possibility to visit the map and discover the venues with a weel-informed, personalized and immersive exploration.

This leads us to consider TerraNumerica as the prefiguration of a global information system founded on a 3D geographic database permitting the dynamic access to the whole accessible contents in the service of the users : tourists, professionals, local authorities or general public.

THE INFORMATION SYSTEM MERGER

To couple together the most advanced information systems and to allow their use in all the contexts : common or professional life, on screen or in situ.

The information converges towards various supports such as an ordinary mobile phone,  Internet, augmented reality systems or even spectacular virtual reality system.

MAIN TECHNOLOGICAL STAKES

The ambition of this Research and development project is to cross the actual technological limits on productivity, realism and faithfulness in the development of huge urban 3D databases and their associated contents.
This project stakes deal with the automation of digital lines, data structuration and the adaptation of visualization on several platforms: web service, mobile application and techniques of virtual and augmented reality.
Based on a realistic and interactive visual reproduction, TerraNumerica requires the adaptation of representation quality to actual and future supports and consultation modalities; the integration and interaction of the synthetic environment with real data flows; the SIG standards compatibility and the interoperability with most used ‘virtual globes’.
A 3D demonstrators validation
The TerraNumerica project is based on a pragmatic development schedule, where the validation of modelling, production and 3D urban data exploitation abilities is supported by a set of demonstrators, representing the 3 modalities access to information.
The aim of these demonstrators is to open the project towards a wild range of application coming from technologies developed in the TerraNumerica frame.
